day in the life - 20th April 2014

I was thinking of doing a picture-only Day In The Life post this time round, but I can't resist adding a running commentary for posterity's sake and also so this won't just be a huge post of Dulcie photos.  Here goes...

Dulcie gets us up at a not-too-early hour and helps me to feed the cats.  She likes to have this as one of her jobs, but the cats are so greedy that she often finds it hard to get the bowl past them and on the floor.  Help is not welcome, however!

Cats fed, Dulcie sits up at the Easter-themed table and asks where her own breakfast is.

She has an Easter egg with a Peppa Pig breakfast set included so we open it up.  I like her style, attacking the enclosed chocolate egg with great gusto.

She eats the whole thing and follows it with cereal and toast.  I have toast and peanut butter.  Lola manages to steal one slice from my plate despite me trying to hold her back.  I wrestle it back off her and throw it in the bin, sustaining a few cat scratches in the process.  Graham's sister, who's been staying this weekend, gets up and makes me a cup of coffee.  Lovely!

Breakfast consumed, we set about decorating some hard-boiled eggs.  I attempted to dye them the night before, but got distracted and left them in the vinegar solution for too long and they came out looking like eggy burn victims.  We do our best to jazz them up with crayons and stickers.

I think Dulcie is a bit confused by the whole thing.

The best-looking eggs are these ones that I made using little shrink-wrap jackets.  I found these in Sentry Box toys last week and suddenly remembered using them when I was wee, something I had forgotten all about for years.

We all agreed this sticker looked uncannily like Dulcie!

Auntie Dee Dee (Graham's sister) heads off to get the bus home and the rest of us get ready for a day in the sunshiney park.  Dulcie, who got a slightly red head the day before, still fits in last year's sun hat.  Hooray!

We make a quick stop-off in the shops for picnic supplies then just make it across the road to the park ahead of a procession of thousands of motorbikes, riding to raise money for Yorkhill Hospital (where Dulcie stayed when she was teeny and had pneumonia) we discover later.  We set up our blanket under a tree and Dulcie strikes a pose for a photo or two.

Talking of striking a pose...  These are the first prescription sunglasses I've EVER had and I'm loving them.  No more having to choose between migraines and blindness.  Dulcie and I did not co-ordinate outfits on purpose.

We snack on our picnic (le pain, no vin, le Boursin) and play with this bubble gun.  Bubbles always make Dulcie happy, although the wind is blowing them off faster than we can make them.

I lounge on the blanket for a while and watch Dulcie and Graham playing football.  Dulcie spends most of her time lying on top of the ball.  Graham spends most of his time pretending to fall over.

Dulcie stops for some grapes and to recharge her batteries.

She wanders off again, so I start browsing the Observer magazine from the comfort of the blanket.  I really like Eva Wiseman, but in this article she is talking about being pregnant.  I torture myself by reading it all and realise I will probably never read Eva Wiseman again now, which is a shame because I like liked her writing.

Dulcie appears with a little daisy bouquet for my buttonhole.  I wander off with Dulcie to make daisy chains and examine leaf skeletons.

We roll the boiled eggs, starting on the grass before moving to harder ground for optimum cracking.  Dulcie starts using Humpty Dumpty as a verb, saying, "My egg got humpty-dumptied!"

We head to the playpark, where the slide and the roundabout are the biggest hits of the day.

Graham's phone rings, so Dulcie takes over the task of pushing the roundabout...

..before leading me off for a game of hide-and-seek.  She never gives me long enough to hide very well.

It was our friend Daniel on the phone.  He moved to Shetland a few months ago, but is visiting Glasgow this week so he comes to meet us in the park.  We hang out in the children's garden, Dulcie's favourite place where she is most easily entertained.  I keep Dulcie going while the men indulge in man-chat. Dulcie (with a bit of assistance from yours truly) makes two new friends - Sophie (very bossy) and Charlotte (very chatty).  She also sees her nursery pal Wolfy who she sees EVERYWHERE she goes.

We stop off at the shop for a couple of dinner ingredients and head for home.

Once home, Graham gets busy in the kitchen while Dulcie and I watch Rainbow (she loves the theme tune suddenly) as a distraction aid while I cut her toenails.  It goes very smoothly and quickly, a total contrast to how it normally goes.

Dulcie insists we switch to Peppa Pig.  I am just dozing off when the buzzer goes.

It's my mum and dad.  We weren't expecting them until about 9pm.  Apparently they texted the change of plans earlier, but I haven't looked at my phone all day.  Dulcie is very pleased to see them, especially since my mum has found a Peppa Pig car in a car-boot sale.

Graham, clever boy that he is, manages to make dinner (leek and boursin - leftover from lunch - risotto and salad) stretch a bit further.

Dinner entertainment mainly consists of Dulcie making everyone turn their glasses "side-up-down".  I think my awesome glasses still look good, even this way round.

After this, my mum and dad give Dulcie her bath while I try to get my lunch together for the following day and tidy up a bit.  I am finding it very hard to continue.  I've not been feeling great lately and would like to collapse, but then when will the stuff get done?

My dad does my usual job of reading Dulcie's bedtime stories.  My mum and I fold Dulcie's washing even though I still just want to collapse.

Stories read, Dulcie can't go on either.  She weeps and wails until I wrestle her into bed and switch off the light, then she almost instantly falls asleep.

I sit and chat to my mum and dad and Graham for a while, but finally admit defeat and head for bed at around 10pm.  Zzzz!  Sadly, my sleep is not destined to be uninterrupted and Dulcie is up and down fairly regularly, shouting about this that and the other and generally thrashing around.  Yawn...

I realise, looking back, that this day seems abolutely idyllic.  It didn't feel that way to me (I did enjoy many parts of it, but misery loomed heavily on my mind throughout) but at least nobody nearly died this time around!  Ha!

day in the life - the easter special

Last time I chose the date for Day In The Life, I ended up nearly not being able to take part due to my untimely death.  (You might be able to work out that I lived to tell the tale, but my own Day In The Life post was not the happy one I had planned, but rather a sorry tale of panic attacks in an MRI scanner and crying for pretty much 24 hours solid...)  However, in a bid not to succumb to superstitious paranoia, when Claire asked me if I'd like to choose this month's date, I jumped at the chance...albeit in a hesitant manner.

Day In The Life, for those of you who don't know, is a day when anyone with a blog who would care to join in records the minutiae of their day on a specific date.  You can record it any way you like.  We've had lengthy wordy posts, photographic records, A-Zs, illustrated hourly updates, graphs...  The possibilities are endless.  You can record your day in any way you fancy.

The date for this month's Day In The Life is Sunday April 20th.  Yes, that's Easter Sunday!  Please spread the word and consider joining in yourself.  I love looking back on my own Day In The Life posts, they're a great wee record and they're fun (if a little challenging sometimes) to write too.  If you do take part, please let me know by leaving a comment on my blog.  I'll compile a linky list of all the posts so everyone can read about the days of everyone else in the Day In The Life community.

day in the life - monday 24th june 2013

7.30am - My alarm goes off and I get up and shower and dress.  Dulcie sleeps on in our bed.
7.50am - The cats are yowling for breakfast, but when I go to the cupboard, I realise there is no cat food left.  Looks like I will have to go to the corner shop for emergency supplies.
7.55am - Dulcie gets up, so the cats will have to wait.  I make her some rice crispies with raisins and bananas, a change from her usual porridge.
(This is what Dulcie does these days when we ask her to smile.)

8.05am - I head out for cat food.  Graham (who is sitting in a towel eating breakfast) requests that I hurry up. This is not well received!
8.20am - Cat food purchased and cats fed, I finally get to make my own breakfast.  I do this in a hurry, knowing I will need to eat fast to finish it before Dulcie starts wanting to escape her high chair.  This is toast and honey with a vitamin drink and a cup of tea in my favourite Moomin mug.  This is too much liquid (don't tell my consultant!) but in the end I don't manage to drink the tea, so it really doesn't matter.
I also take my morning tablets.
8.30am - This is a fairly typical level of mess post-eating for Dulcie.  You can see why I'm thinking we'll have to go with oil cloth for these seats...  I clear up the breakfast things and she runs around in her nappy, happy to be reunited with all her toys, until I have swept the floor etc.
9.00am - I've managed to get Dulcie dressed without too much fighting (for once) so she has a play with the toy mound behind the sofa and actually lets me check my emails and read a couple of blogs.  I see something on Nikki McWilliams' blog that I think would make a perfect present for someone I know and, in an uncharacteristic fit of organisation, I seek it out and order it, planning to keep it for their birthday/Christmas.
10.10am - Dulcie and I head out to Bounce and Rhyme at the local library, taking a minor detour via the charity shop to drop off a couple of bags of donations.
11.00am - Singing over, Dulcie reads a few books on the groovy library carpet before we head across the road to the supermarket.  I'm not organised enough to do a weekly shop today (as I have done for the last few Mondays) but I manage not to go too wild and just buy a few healthy bits for today's lunch and dinner.  Oh, actually, I went round a few charity shops too, but didn't find anything worth photogrpahing let alone buying.  I'm getting better at resisting these days!
11.45am - On the way home, we meet this friendly ginger cat, much to Dulcie's delight.  Other way, Dulcie!
We stay and stroke him for a while and he rubs his head on Dulcie's shoes a lot before we head home.
11.55am - We share a healthy snack of strawberries.  I'm a take-them-or-leave-them type when it comes to strawberries usually, but this year they are freakin' delicious!  Dulcie absolutely adores strawberries at the moment, so she polishes off most of this bowl before I manage to put my camera away.  I prepare another bowl, but she eats the majority of that one too.
1.00pm - After reading about a gazillion picture books, it's time for lunch.  Dulcie has hedgehog (my own "creation" of houmous with breadsticks and vegetables stuck in it) while I have tasty pitta breads stuffed with houmous and beetroot and salad.

1.45pm - Dulcie wants to draw.  I know this because she tells me.  "Daw!"
Dulcie's idea of drawing is to tell me to draw something, which she then scribbles over.  She used to always ask me to draw dogs, but these days it is always either "Daddy" or "apple" with just the occasional "doggie" for good measure.  I find this orange picture, which she insists is me.  I guess Graham must have created this flattering portrait for her at the weekend...

2.05pm - While playing with her toys, Dulcie discovers that she can operate this one with her bottom.  This keeps her entertained for a fair while.
2.15pm - We set off for the park.  When we arrive, Dulcie heads straight for the tunnel where she was attacked just a few days previously.  As you can see from this smiling face, she is not bearing any obvious mental scars from the incident.
As well as the tunnel, she spends lots of time playing on the swings, the slide and pretty much everything really.  There is a nursery outing in the park and I end up having to push almost all of them on the roundabout at once.  Dulcie makes lots of friends by shouting "Wheee!" whenever they go down the slide.  We stay at the park for most of the afternoon, until it is completely swamped by small school children who are a bit rough for Dulcie's taste.  Well, some of them are.  One group of girls gathers round to coo over Dulcie and tell me how cute she is.  This goes down very well with Dulcie, who adopts her best coy pose.

4.00pm - Before we head home, we buy an ice cream from the van in the park and share it.  Delicious.  Luckily for me, Dulcie is better at sharing ice cream than she is at sharing strawberries.

4.30pm - Back home, we read more books (and more books and more books) and play with some more toys.  I start getting dinner ready (we're having baked potato and salad tonight) and try to tidy up so Graham won't have so much to do later, just in case Dulcie decides to be a bed-refuser.

6.00pm - Graham gets in from work and we all have dinner together.

6.25pm - I grab a few things and run out the door to work.  The underground takes ages to arrive and I can't get a seat when it does.  I still manage to read a bit of my Alexander McCall Smith book, though.

7.00pm - I arrive at work just in the nick of time and have my annual appraisal, which is OK.  A few things make me pretty mad, but I bite my tongue.  My manager is lovely and would sort things out, I'm sure, but I don't want them to end up being turned into yet more appraisal objectives for me, so I figure for my own sake that I should just smile and nod as much as possible.

8.00pm - Despite not having done any work yet, I take my break early so that I can catch up with my friend Susan in the kitchen.

8.40pm - I write up my appraisal notes and then do some subtitling at last.  It's not too hard a night really.  I do a few proofs and then get lumbered with some motor racing, but it turns out not to be too bad as my part has a really long musical interlude that requires no subtitles.  Score!  I also have to do the weather, but this passes without major incident.

12.00 midnight - My taxi arrives and takes me home where I have a quick mini whisky with Graham before crawling into bed.  Yawn!

And so ends a fairly typical Monday really.  Well, we don't normally have ice cream, but other than that...  I'm not sure who else has taken part in Day In The Life this month, but there's at least one here and one here (with added puppy).

day in the life - monday 10th september 2012

Midnight - midday
Dulcie sleeps better than she has been lately and just gets me up a couple of times.  While giving her her second feed of the night at 5.30am, I think about how I would like to raise money for the British Heart Foundation but am not the type to walk the West Highland Way etc.  I come up with a plan to open an online shop either on Etsy or Folksy.  When Dulcie goes back to bed, I can't get back to sleep so I lie in bed planning my "charity shop" until I give up on sleep and get up for the day.  I have toast and butter and a cup of decaf coffee while browsing the internet for any insight into whether Etsy or Folksy would best suit my purpose.  This research reminds me how time consuming listing items is and I start to get cold feet over my grand plan, which has got a lot more complicated since I came up with it an hour or two earlier.  Dulcie gets up at about 7.30 (if my memory serves me correctly - I took no notes today) and I give her a bit more milk then medicine and breakfast.  I spend the morning playing with Dulcie (who is being quite easy going today) and getting her and me washed and dressed.  I manage to get some minor tidying up done before popping Dulcie in the baby carrier and heading out to the underground.

Midday-midnight
Dulcie and I get off the underground in town and head to the train station to meet my mum.  Once she arrives we all get back on the underground and head to the west end for lunch and Kember and Jones.  For once we don't have to queue and get a table straight away.  I have my usual - a goats cheese salad - and it is just as delicious as ever, which is very, very, very delicious indeed.  I have taken a wee packed lunch for Dulcie and she sits quite happily in the high chair to eat it, even though we have to wedge her in with all three of our jackets and she still slides down to a strange angle.  She starts getting grumpy just as we finish eating (good timing!) so we head home where we have a cup of coffee and an empire biscuit that my mum made herself and brought with her.  My mum keeps Dulcie entertained most of the afternoon and I start the MAMMOTH task of clearing out (I mean clearing out as in emptying completely, not just tidying up) the craft room.  I make a good start, throwing out lots of large items and bin bags to the back lane since tomorrow is the day the council comes to collect them.  This is most satisfying.  After a while I stop, shake the the dust off myself and the three of us head out with the pram to the supermarket to get a couple of missing ingredients for tonight's dinner.  When we get back my mum entertains Dulcie again (I am loving having a live-in baby-sitter already and it is only day one of her week-long visit) while I make dinner - a sweet potato curry with lashings of peanut butter.  I've been allergy testing Dulcie over the last week or so and she has shown no reactions so she'll be eating it too, lucky thing.  The sweet potatoes take a ridiculously long time to cook, so dinner is a bit late, but is very tasty when it arrives.  After dinner Graham gives Dulcie her bath while my mum and I tidy up the kitchen.  I give Dulcie a feed  while watching EastEnders and she dozes off looking all contented but is not keen to be in her cot and keeps waking/screaming every time I try to put her in there.  I fall asleep while cuddling her in the chair in the bedroom, but when I wake up I discover that she is sound asleep too (not having been dropped or smothered by her irresponsible sleeping mother) and I finally manage to get her into her bed just after 9.  I dig out some photo frames and put in a few family pictures to have in the living room, chatting to my mum while I do.  Graham leaves us in peace and spends the evening doing mysterious internet business in the kitchen.  We both manage to sneak into bed without waking Dulcie up.  When Graham gets up to go to the toilet, however, Dulcie is not best pleased and the screaming begins.  Fortunately for anyone reading this, that was at midnight so you can be spared the horror of the rest of my sleep-deprived night!

And I think that is about it for my Day In The Life.  Marceline should be posting links to everyone else's posts once she's back from her jaunt up north, but I think Claire has collated some of them already if you just can't wait to see what anyone else got up to on this day.

p.s. Sorry for the lack of pictures.  I may have my mum here to help me this week, but Dulcie and the craft room are still keeping me busy!  Feels really good to be making some progress with my outstanding to-do list though :)

day in the life - 3.7.12

Dulcie and Patch, two of the day's major protagonists.
1.30am - Dulcie wakes up for a feed and it's not the first one of the night either.  Ugh.  I'm so tired after a few nights of this behaviour that I take her into the big bed with me and sleep while she feeds.  Eventually she falls asleep too.

3.30am - Dulcie wakes up for another feed.  Again, ugh.  This time I put her back in her cot to sleep because I never fully sleep when she's in bed beside me for fear that I smother her or kick her out by accident.  I go to the toilet and meet Patch the elderly three-legged cat on the way.  He says, "Miaow."  We're at my mum and dad's house by the way, in case you were confused that our cats had changed name and lost a limb!

5.30am - Yup, you guessed it - milk time.  This is like the dark days of many months ago.  So tired.

7.00am - You have got to be kidding me, Dulcie.

7.30am - At least she goes back to sleep afterwards.

7.40am - Or does she?  Nope, she's decided it's time to get up for the day and she is inexplicably full of energy.  Surely she's had as little sleep as me?  We go downstairs to change her nappy and we play with her toys on the floor.  My dad is up already and offers to look after Dulcie for me, but I don't feel like I'd get back to sleep anyway, so he makes me a coffee instead.  Patch comes to investigate what we're up to.

8.30am - My mum gets up and gives Dulcie (now grumpy) a bit of a cuddle, where she falls asleep.  Not fair, I say.  I go and have a shower and get dressed.

9.15am - Dulcie is still sleeping on my mum's shoulder.  My granny is up now, telling stories about people from Islay, where she lives.  The postman arrives with a birthday parcel for my granny and a book catalogue for my mum, which I open and read.

10.00am - Dulcie is still asleep so I decide to make myself some breakfast - veggie bacon and a buttery, a local high-fat delicacy (the buttery, not the veggie bacon!) - but as soon as the bacon hits the pan, Dulcie wakes up and decides she wants to be fed.  I wolf my breakfast and feed Dulcie.

Two of Dulcie's favourite songs, filmed last week.  She does usually react more than this (what I was trying to capture) but she got distracted by the camera.  I hired a professional singer for the recording, naturally.

10.45am - I get Dulcie dressed and we play on the floor and then sing some songs.  She likes the ones that involve being thrown in the air.  It's not easy to throw her around when I feel this tired.  All through the day I hear everyone humming Eyes Nose Cheeky Cheeky Chin and The Little Green Frog.  This just goes to show just how much time I spend singing ridiculous songs these days.  My granny gives Dulcie a cuddle while I get some food out of the freezer for her lunch later.

11.15am - Dulcie is getting grumpy so I take her and give her a cuddle and almost immediately she falls asleep on my shoulder, where she stays for about an hour.  Tired much, Dulcie?  Hmm, I wonder why that might be...  My dad has to go to a funeral today so he heads out.

Dulcie, her great-granny and that helium balloon.
12.15pm - My mum takes Dulcie while I finish getting her lunch ready.  The paper boy sees Dulcie through the window and rings the doorbell so he can meet her.  My mum tells Dulcie to look out because he is a bad boy.  He says, "Look out, Dulcie, she's a bad granny!"  My mum and dad's paper boy is funny.  I give Dulcie her lunch (a random vegetable medley followed by slices of nectarine, her favourite dessert) but she's not massively interested today.  I eat lunch (sandwiches made from leftovers from my granny's birthday buffet followed by homemade shortbread and carrot cake) while Dulcie plays on the floor and has her grasp of gravity threatened by watching a helium balloon.  She's happy for a while, but then starts shouting for food.  Other babies I know who are on solids have just two or three milk feeds a day.  Dulcie is now on feed number seven for today and it's only lunchtime.  I'm so tired!

The Fisher Price big wheel.  Look at the grumpy expression on the face of the boy who is destined to crank the handle for all eternity.
1.45pm - My mum offers to take Dulcie for a walk so I can get some sleep.  I go to get Dulcie ready and she gets distracted by a vintage Fisher Price big wheel.  It plays a very pretty tune and keeps her entertained in a very quiet way for a good ten minutes.  I get Dulcie into her pushchair and she heads out for a walk with my mum and granny.  I receive strict instructions to go for a sleep, which sounds like a good idea, but I catch up on a couple of blogs and type up my day in the life so far instead.  Very silly of me.

3.00pm - I decide a nap probably is a good idea after all.  I get slightly distracted reading a few pages of my book (The Tiger's Wife) but then doze off in my mum and dad's bed.

Reading in the back garden.
4.00pm - I hear Dulcie and co get home and get out of bed.  The nap has not made me feel any better.  I come downstairs to find Dulcie is still asleep in her pram so I make myself a cup of tea and take it out to the back garden where I read my book until Dulcie wakes up and demands to be fed.  I feed her in the back garden then take her inside to play on the floor.

My mum and dad circa 1971.  Check out the pins on my mum!
Oh no!  They're snogging!
5.00pm - I take a fruity concoction out of the freezer and start boiling some sweet potato sticks for Dulcie's dinner.  My dad has taken out some old photo albums for my granny to look at so I have a look through them.  I reckon my mum should have been a model.  I do look like her, but a version of her that's been beaten with the ugly/lumpy stick!  Ha!  There is an old menu in the photo album and I am shocked to discover that a fancy pizza in an Italian restaurant only cost 40p in the 1970s!  I get so engrossed in the photo albums that I forget all about the sweet potato sticks on the cooker.  Fortunately my mum is efficient as well as good looking and has rescued them just as they were about to boil dry.

Dulcie's very first high-chair experience.  She does well, but does need to be wedged in place with a cushion.
(Edit:  I just noticed the big pink pants in the background!  I apologise to whoever they belong to!)
5.30pm - Dulcie tries out a high chair for the first time and does very well with it.  She eats a few sweet potato sticks (she's only ever had pureed sweet potato before so it's a very good attempt) then wolfs down a huge portion of mushed up banana, mango and grapes with wheat flakes.

6.00pm - More singing, but Dulcie is on the turn so I take her to play with my dad's computer.  That perks her up and then she plays on the floor with her great-granny for a while.

6.45pm - My mum has made dinner for us.  Dulcie is shouting again so my mum and dad take turns to walk around with her while the rest of us eat.  They would both rather cuddle Dulcie than eat dinner and always race to finish their food first, though they would deny that.

7.15pm - My mum and granny give Dulcie her bath.

7.30pm - I feed Dulcie until she falls asleep looking like an adorable version of Mick Jagger.  Trout pout!

8.10pm - I take Dulcie up to her bed thinking she'll want more milk, but she falls asleep when I put her down so I head back downstairs with my fingers crossed.  I take some photos of the amazing printing sets my mum got for me recently (more on that in another post) until I hear Dulcie screaming blue murder from upstairs.

My mystery printing sets, a present from my mum.
8.20pm - Another wee feed for Dulcie and then she settles into bed sucking her thumb so I go back downstairs and finish photographing the printing sets.

9.00pm - Graham phones from Glasgow.  He didn't sleep well last night either so we yawn at each other for a few minutes and then hang up.

The very tiny foal.
9.30pm - My mum and I walk to the end of the street to see the tiny new foal.  I have a very strong aversion to horses normally, but this foal is truly tiny and freakin' cute!  It comes up to the fence to see us, wobbles about on its ridiculously long legs and chases rabbits round the field as though it was a puppy.

10.00pm - Back in the house I finally cave in to offers of whisky.  Just a little one.  Bah.  My dad cracked open his collection of single malts when he retired recently so there are a few very nice bottles on the go.  I am generally enjoying being a booze-free zone but I do so love nice whisky.  And nice wine.  Beer has its place in my heart too.  I had a glass of champagne on Sunday for my granny's 80th birthday, so this has been a very boozy few days for me - at least two units of alcohol over three days!

11.00pm - I show my mum and dad the Egyptian Playmobil set I've got my nephew for his birthday so that they don't buy him the same one and then head to bed with fingers firmly crossed that Dulcie is not quite so hungry tonight.

11.25pm - Dulcie wakes up for a feed and when I put her back in her cot just before midnight she looks decidedly awake.  All I can say is that you're lucky Day In The Life finishes at midnight because it's a long and sorry tale from midnight onwards!  Yawn!
